Speaking exclusively with Insurance Times, Leicester City Community Partner Rhino Trade Insurance’s Chief Executive Troy Stevens talks innovation and forward-thinking in their approach to reinvigorating trade insurance.

Rhino Trade Insurance offer business insurance to UK tradespeople, from Public Liability Insurance to Tools Cover. Troy Stevens, Rhino’s chief executive, sat down with Insurance Times’ Isobel Rafferty this month to discuss how Rhino is ‘demystifying’ insurance for the trades as well as ‘driving equality’ in a thriving market.

As Isobel summarises, Rhino Trade Insurance is a relatively new player in the trade insurance market, bursting onto the scene in 2019 with an aim to shake up the insurance industry and better serve their target market. As Isobel states, “For Stevens, a key driver for birthing the new business was to address his belief that tradespeople have been “dealt a bad hand” when it comes to insurance, as well as meet his desire to serve a community that he considers a “fantastic group of people”.”

Troy articulates throughout the interview that trade insurance was something in dire need of reinvention, and that he felt that tradespeople were being ‘let down’ by the then market leaders offering business insurance. Insurance for tradespeople is vital, and having affordable and understandable cover is key in ensuring that self-employed professionals are getting the cover they need. As Isobel explains, “Stevens explains that one challenge for tradespeople is how insurance policies and cover costs are articulated – this has contributed to levels of underinsurance in this sector “not because tradespeople are trying to cut corners”, but “simply because they don’t understand the risks of the liabilities they face”.

Rhino has made massive leaps in innovation and technology to better serve the tradespeople it supports. With it’s simple to use ‘Just Eat’ style click and quote engine, customers can build their own insurance packages depending on their requirements, ensuring that they only get the cover they need in the simplest possible way.

As Isobel explains, “Stevens and his team have set their minds to “demystifying” insurance by “taking away the stigma” that it is “scary” and out to “trip” people up.”

Rhino’s ethos has always been to make insurance easier, and this can be felt within the use of terminology used throughout it’s website, as well as ease of information provided. Troy believes that tradespeople should be able to get their insurance “done as quickly and easily as possible”, as Isobel highlights, and it shows throughout their website and brand.

The Rhino brand is really something to be enjoyed, and their social media presence is renowned amongst tradespeople for being inclusive and entertaining. Rhino offers a range of policies suitable for UK tradespeople available to customers online and via a team of sales agents at their Leicester-based Head Office.

Rhino Trade Insurance won the Specialist National Broker of the Year award at the Insurance Times Awards in December 2022 – the business was praised for “building a specialist insurance service that reflected the values of its target audience”.

The trade insurance specialists have been proud partners of the inaugural Leicester City Community Partnership since 2021 as part of their continued support to the Leicestershire community, via the power of sport.
